Evaluation

Originally we looked at Vanessa by Grimes, Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana and If You Wanna by The Vaccines. All three videos would have been good to do but we decided to choose The Vaccines’ video  because the concept was simple – a live band video. The video was in the same format as the Nirvana one but The Vaccines one didn’t have a large crowd, which would be hard to replicate. We chose  the first minute of The Vaccines video, which finished right at the end of the first chorus. Another reason for choosing this video was due to the fact we had all of the facilities within the college for producing this video. The theatre had a selection of coloured lights that were needed. We booked the theatre but could only get it for one session. This meant that we didn’t have enough time to shoot the whole video. We managed to get 15 seconds of useable footage from that session and were unable get anymore footage before the deadline. We decided it would be a good idea to choose a different video that could be done in the remaining 5 days of the project. Therefore, we chose Snow Patrol’s Chasing Cars because it could be done fairly quickly around the city centre, making it easy to go back and re shoot any parts that needed to be done again. Chasing cars only had one actor in the video which made it easy to set a shooting schedule. Trying to get 4 people, a drum kit, 3 guitars and a theater is much harder than originally thought. Chasing cars also only has 8 shots in the 60 seconds that we chose. The Vaccines one had around 20 individual shots with 44 cuts.

Even though we decided to choose a second video, we thought it would be a good idea to keep the first video because it served as some valuable experience for producing a video. We learnt a lot about teamwork and organization – specifically planning ahead. We also learnt about framing shots, editing and improvisation out in the field. The problems we faced as a reminder of the importance of forward planning.

I have really enjoyed the transition project and I am proud of the work we have produced. I feel I have learnt a lot about production that I can take on to next year not only in Media studies, but Film studies as well.

Lyrics and Timings

We'll do it all
Everything
On our own
We don't need
Anything
Or anyone

36 to 38
If I lay here
40 to 44
If I just lay here
45 to 51
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

57 to 61
I don't quite know
63 to 65
How to say
67 to 70
How I feel

76 to 79
Those three words
81 to 83
Are said too much
85 to 88
They're not enough

91 to 94
If I lay here
96 to 99
If I just lay here
101 to 106
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

Forget what we're told
Before we get too old
Show me a garden that's bursting into life
Let's waste time
Chasing cars
Around our heads
I need your grace
To remind me
To find my own
If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?
Forget what we’re told
Before we get too old
Show me a garden that's bursting into life
All that I am
All that I ever was
Is here in your perfect eyes, they're all I can see
I don't know where
Confused about how as well
Just know that these things will never change for us at all
If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

The Vaccines - If You Wanna

This is the footage we have got from our filming session, I am happy with the work that has been done here buy the group, especially, Nick's camerawork and editing. It is a shame to have to abandon this video but it serves as some valuable experience.

Change of plan

Due to our inability book out the theatre space for a second filming session, we decided it be best to start work on a different music video. All of our work for the previous video will be included as development. With this video we will reconstruct 0:35-1:35.

  • a cover for its release as part of a digipak (CD/DVD Package)
  • a magazine advertisement for the the digipak (CD/DVD Package)

In order to prepare your A2 Media Studies coursework - the Advance Portfolio, you need to:

  • Work in a group of 3 or 4 people to plan and produce a reconstruction of a minute from an existing music video.
  • Set up individual A2 coursework blogs and choose your coursework brief.
  • Gather and evidence research into the conversations of your chosen brief over the summer starting with codes and conventions of your media form with examples, and also the genre of the text you intend to produce. (i.e. Music Video conventions and rock conventions as an example.
